See I’m a poet to some, a regular modern-day Shakespeare
– ‘Renegade’ by Jay Z ft. Eminem
I never truly noticed, but despite some people’s preconceived notions that Eminem’s music is just angry and aggressive, I have truly learnt A LOT from it. His language and ability to twist everyday words to mean something so intelligent has honestly helped me with the subjects I study and in many ways, has given me an everlasting bank of words that seem to pop up out of the blue every now and then as I write the 1000th essay in my amateur writing career.
Two years ago, I remember stumbling across an English Literature revision website while anxiously awaiting my GCSE’s to be over. I was so shocked to see them using lyrics from the one and only Eminem as an example of poetry that needed to be analysed closely. I don’t know why, but I felt so proud – not only because I consider myself a fan but because it was the first time I had actually noticed the power in his words and the fact that Rap is truly a form of poetry – well at least the way in which he uses it.
Subliminally.
subliminal
adjective sub·lim·i·nal \(ˌ)sə-ˈbli-mə-nəl\
: relating to things that influence your mind in a way that you do not notice
That’s the word that came to me as I sat writing a History essay and it’s so ironic how it’s so apt to what I feel about Eminem’s words. They have subliminally shaped a lot of my thoughts and how I react to situations, in a GOOD way.
It was my decision to get clean, I did it for me
Admittedly, I probably did it subliminally
For you, so I could come back a brand new me you helped see me through– ‘Not Afraid’ by Eminem
So thanks for the inspiration Eminem. Please return to music as soon as you can.
Peace & Love,
