‘Talk that Talk’

Why is it so damn hard for people to talk?’
– Big Daddy

So I just had my English lesson where we’re studying ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ by Tennessee Williams. It’s an amazing literary novel which uses a huge plantation as a sort of microcosm for how America in the 50s operated. It discusses everything from secrecy to homosexuality – you name it. I think Williams’ explicit style of writing is one of the reasons why I love the story so much; coupled with my infatuation with the beautiful Paul Newman who played Brick in the 1958 film version. (But for real, he was really attractive in his day πŸ‘Œ)

As of now, I’m really inspired by Big Daddy’s character. Despite his vulgarity and bully-like demeanour, the man truly speaks sense. Today we analysed his view on the hypocrisy of 50s America. He detests people “sneakin’ and spyin'” and approves of things being out in the open, so people can speak their minds and say exactly what they mean.

Reading this was kind of like a confirmation for me because recently I’ve found that I struggle with verbalising exactly what I mean. It’s been a real issue especially since we’ve been developing interview techniques which I originally thought I wouldn’t need until I discovered that I’d be going for an interview in the near future. The news of this shocked me at first and I was really upset because I wanted either a direct yes or no from this particular university. However on further recollection, I became thankful that I’ve been given this opportunity because not only does it show that they have interest in me as a person, but it’s erasing my complacency and pushing me to stop muddling up what I mean, and just
S P E A K.

Even though I’m still SO nervous, I’m reminding myself of what I wrote about in my first post on this blog- which was about trying to be myself. It’s not been easy, I admit, but I’m excited to continue learning new things about Tolu and realising that I actually like who I am and who I’m developing into.

So I encourage y’all to ‘Say what you wanna say, and let the words fly out!’ (I’m such a cheeseball I know but you can’t deny that speaking up is one of the hardest yet most necessary things to do in life.)

Peace & Love,

T

Xx
