NCS

‘You never know what life is like until you’ve lived it’ – Marilyn Monroe

Exhilarating.
Indescribable.
Unique.

Three key words that don’t even come close to describing how amazing this experience was.

For those of you who are unaware, NCS which stands for ‘National Citizen Service’ is a Youth Programme that runs through Summer and Half terms. It’s an amazing opportunity to meet new people and push your limits in ways you may have never tried before!

It felt so good knowing that by participating in it, I was learning how to overcome various fears and also learning the value of teamwork and perseverance. Now all that may sound extremely cheesy and stereotypical but to be perfectly honest, there is no other way to put it.

A few months ago, my amazing friend Gwendolyne went for the same programme and returned with an overflow of praises for how incredible the experience was! At the time, I was merely in awe of how she described the experience but didn’t understand the full extent of what she spoke about until I experienced it myself!

Take ‘Tree Tops’ for example;

So I suffer from acrophobia. It’s really, really, REALLY severe in my mind, hence why you’d never find me kicking it at Thorpe Park. I cried coming down the Eiffel Tower so I think that speaks for itself. Now I definitely wouldn’t have imagined myself, locked onto a harness walking on a thin piece of rope, several metres away from the ground. But participating in NCS pushed me to do it. Even though I literally felt like I could have fallen and died at any minute, I was given solace by remembering that God has not given me a spirit of fear. I kept going and surprisingly I came out alive and well with the hopes of repeating it all over!

That’s just one example of how simple yet tasking activities offered at NCS can change your whole mentality.

I feel so blessed to have gone and not only strengthened my relationships with three of my friends but made new ones who are just as weirdly amazing.

NCS is an experience that will definitely last with me for a lifetime.

It pushed me.
It trained me to believe in my abilities.
‘It all starts at YES.’
