‘No One Man Should Have All That Power’

Power: the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events.
“a political process that offers people power over their own lives”

Today, my History Lesson would possibly have to be one of the most interesting I’ve had so far this term. We were discussing the factors that led to the 1867 Reform Act in Britain and the key individual Benjamin Disraeli is a name that stuck. This is cause despite being a member of the Conservative party who embraced Reform while the majority of it didn’t, he was prepared to take the risk of collaborating with members of the Liberal party who were also opposed to reform rather than do what I had originally thought was the ‘logical’ thing i.e. unite with the pro-reform Liberals. The reasons why he did this were alarming to me. He despised the Liberals and their leader William Gladstone and wanted to take the glory of bringing about the Reform for himself as it would’ve placed him in a better position to have
greater authority and POWER.

Now I know that all this may sound like a boring History lesson (which I agree to disagree on seeing as I LOVE HISTORY); but it truly made me think.

Why is Power so important?
Why are we so hungry for it?

This doesn’t exclude me cause I find myself aspiring to the standards of Anna Wintour concerning my love for writing as well as fashion simply because she’s at the cutting edge of this industry and is a source of inspiration. However, it is evident that due to her immense amount of power, the sheer utterance of her name could result in various outcomes.

I guess in many ways, power brings a sense of security and solidarity. It allows one to indulge in their true passions properly because they’ve reached a stage where they aren’t ‘hustling’ for anything anymore. You could say they’re transformed into their own bosses.

Having said this, I like to believe that this isn’t entirely the case. I like to believe that hardwork does pay off and that ultimately, God holds all the power and simply uses us as vessels to exercise it. Some of the people in my header represent vessels having been used positively like: Mahatma Gandhi and Nnamdi Azikiwe in using their power to campaign for positive change. However, some are notorious for abusing their power and using it as a platform for dictation like: Stalin.

The concept of complete and utter ‘POWER’ is unattainable…it’s an illusion because what we should aspire to is Happiness and Satisfaction rather than suffer with the materialism that comes with having Power.

‘For God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of sound mind’ – 2 Timothy 1:7

GOD has given us power already, our aspirations don’t need to lie in obtaining any humanly shreds of it.

Power is mine.
Power is yours.
What do you plan on doing with it?

I don’t know my plans but all I’m certain of is that in the words of our beloved Nigerian runner, Ejowvokoghene Oduduru; ‘God gave it to me, I’m grateful to him’
