Let's Write

So I was browsing through my Instagram feed and saw Lindsay Lohan’s latest post (yes, I follow Lindsay Lohan. Watch one episode of her docuseries and you’ll understand why I like her even more so now). Once I saw it, I immediately thought of this poem by Philip Larkin who I’m ironically studying as part of my English course right now:

Born Yesterday

Philip Larkin

For Sally Amis

Tightly-folded bud,
I have wished you something
None of the others would:
Not the usual stuff
About being beautiful,
Or running off a spring
Of innocence and love —
They will all wish you that,
And should it prove possible,
Well, you’re a lucky girl.

But if it shouldn’t, then
May you be ordinary;
Have, like other women,
An average of talents:
Not ugly, not good-looking,
Nothing uncustomary
To pull you off your balance,
That, unworkable itself,
Stops all the rest from working.
In fact, may you be dull —
If that is what a skilled,
Vigilant, flexible,
Unemphasised, enthralled
Catching of happiness is called.

So after reading it for the first time, this poem may not resonate well with you, it may even offend you as it did to me. I thought, how can your wish for someone’s life be that they remain ‘ordinary and dull’?! But after analysing it at GCSE in very close detail; I found that this poem echoes strength and simplicity. It simply is a reminder that all the extreme stereotypes we seem to want to fit into mean nothing and that actually being balanced and satisfied with your position in life is the best gift anyone could ever offer.

The Bible says:

‘Blessed are the the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven’ – Matthew 5:3

To me, the ‘poor in spirit’ represents anyone who is willing to forget about the extra things that seem to make life more comfortable and instead dwell on what edifies and feeds their soul; which for me being a Christian, means focusing on the word of God. Now I am so guilty cause I rarely ever do this and I admit I get caught up in the extravagancies of life. BUT, I am beginning to learn how to focus on simplicity which I know is found in God.

My thoughts are best expressed by writing.
So that's what I do - I write.

It's how I make sense of it all.
My prayer is that someone somewhere is blessed or is able to relate to what I write.

"Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them..." ~ Romans 12:6
